35TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF AHSAG
Title
35thAnnual Conference of Association of Health Services Administrators, Ghana (AHSAG)
Theme
“Strengthening health system governance through effective information management- the role of the Health Services Administrator”
Why the Theme?
One of the pillars of the current Health Sector Medium-Term Development Plan (2010-2013) is strengthening governance and improving efficiency and effectiveness of the health system. Among the strategies to achieve this policy objective is strengthening systems for improving the evidence base for policy and operational research. Linked to this strategy is the need to improve health information management at all service levels.
Availability of quality, relevant and timely information has long been recognized as the foundation for evidence-based planning and decision making process at all levels of the health system. Despite this recognition, the health sector remains challenged at all levels in managing health information. In general, there are still constraints and deficiencies in the health information system including poor quality data, lack of timely reporting and feedback, gaps, duplication and waste among parallel health information systems, unstructured investments and deployment of ICT and so on. These setbacks affect the quality of information to support evidence-based planning and management decision making process in the health sector. With the increasing advocacy to improve health planning, programme development and resource allocation to address health priorities, the need for greater attention to health information management cannot be overemphasized.
Health services Administrators play a critical role in the collection, management and use of information to support effective health planning and management decision making process which enables management to define priorities, identify innovative solutions and allocate resources to improve health system governance. Enhancing the knowledge of this cadre of staff in understanding and application of modern concepts and techniques in health information system will contribute immensely towards the achievement of the health sector’s strategic objective of strengthening governance and improving efficiency and effectiveness of the health system.
